Homeschooling is not School at Home!

We Homeschooled for 8 years. It was a wonderful family experience that I hope many families, will try to implement, now that they’ve had a sampling of mandatory school-at-home due to the Corona19 virus pandemic stay-at-home orders.

TIP #1: HOMESCHOOLING IS NOT SCHOOL AT HOME

Our goal of ‘Homeschooling’ was to teach our children HOW TO LEARN~ How to embody virtues, and to live full, enriched lives. Homeschooling became a way of life that empowered our children to employ their curiosity, perseverance and knowledge toward a self-directed definition of personal success.

LEARNING STYLES

There are various methods of encouraging your kids to learn away from a school environment. The premise of ‘Multiple Intelligences’ by Howard Gardner is that each person has a mix of ways in which various personalities naturally learn.  They are Linguistic, Logical-Mathematatic, Musical, Kinesthetic, Spatial, Interpersonal and Interpersonal and Naturalistic learning.

Matching the senses to learning styles of Visual/Spatial, Verbal/Auditory, Reading/Writing, Physical/Kinetic and Embodiment via play-acting. All senses should be engaged with learning so that information registers, is retained and can be recalled.

I used individualized teaching methods for each of my kids, because I had insight into each of their motivations, preferences, and native abilities. The added benefit of homeschooling is that you, as a parent, will know (or will learn) what strategies work best with each of your children.

UMBRELLA SCHOOLS & REGISTERING IN YOUR STATE/CITY EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT

Homeschooling is legal in all 50 US States but you must register your children at their local school district prior to each school year so they are not counted as truant. You must pick up their forms that list the state’s requirements and fill in an end-of-year report that the requirements were met. Alternatively, parents can inform the school district which ‘umbrella school’ you are registering with in lieu of giving these reports to the school district and give them to the umbrella school.

SCHOOL AT HOME: One popular choice of schooling is to use the materials packaged by your school district. They usually supply a computer and have teachers who grade students work and confer with parents. To me, this was way too stressful! This is why the great joke about current situation of parents and kids both being exasperated with Homeschooling exists today!! :O

Teachers work ‘in loco parentis’ which is Latin for “in place of parents”. This is the original concept that allows parents to work outside the home and the state to take responsibility for educating youth, however, it regiments creativity into one-size-fits-all boxes and, imho, creates lazy and bored students. When parents have the luxury of matching learning options to individual children, the results are magical! When there are no imposed age restrictions in place, older kids play with and assist younger ones and generations happily mix and learn from each other. This is the great FREEDOM inherent in learning at home; It is a lifestyle that liberates the mind & spirit!

UNSCHOOLING: It’s a fairly radical idea to entertain and is legal in all 50 US States (and territories). People learn all the time, if encouraged and given direction via a question. Some of our friends enrolled their children into an “Umbrella School” that took responsibility for organizing the learning opportunities that children participated in over the year and created documents from the year-end reports that parents turned in. This was the least stressful way that allowed children’s youthful inquisitiveness to direct the learning process. Eventually, all the kids learned to read, write, calculate maths, play instruments, present dramatic entertainment, raise money for charity and become well-adjusted, kind and respectful people. It seemed a bit disorganized for me, but worked wonders when the children were naturally inquisitive and parents were confident that their kids would work things out on their own, or ask for help.

CHILD-LED LEARNING: Another, rather ‘open’ model of Homeschooling, is child-led learning, that is outlined by the State requirements but is left open to parents to co-create with their children and is used mostly in primary grades. Curriculum and educational materials can be purchased whenever the student is ready for a new subject. This one-at-a-time subject method works well if parents are committed to homeschooling over a number of years but can leave gaps in material covered if the parents decided they couldn’t continue with the 1:1 face time. I found it more expensive and decided to write my own curriculum. (Not as hard as it sounds!)

DIY CURRICULUM: Our studies were based on Sequential History, specifically, the History of ‘Western Civilization’ and later ‘Non-Western Civilization’ that integrated science, math, inventions, literature, art, music, culture and civics into each time-period of History. Our education range was from preK-middle school and middle school-high school.

HOURS:

This is probably the biggest stumbling block for many people. They don’t believe they can afford to homeschool or have the skills. Juggling teaching hours with work, or work-at-home can be tricky. Parents can work from home or trade schedules teaching and working with a spouse. Older kids can be educated by a single parent if they are convinced that it’s in their own best interest to do well and be responsible for themselves. In the era of school shootings, unworkable IEPs, and bullying, it was our choice to keep our kids safe and learn from home.

We lived below our means and had a very tight budget. I taught most of the hours but had help in the evenings and weekends with math, science and music. Local vocational schools, bookstores, homeschool networks and outreach programs offered field trips and enrichment opportunities.

I believe anyone can teach. Supplement what you know with what you learn while researching your subject. You only need to stay a week ahead of the kids to be able to ask pertinent questions. Your life experience counts for a lot! It keeps you on your toes and you’ll be surprised at how much fun it is to learn alongside your kids. Look things up together. Enjoy the adventure!

In a few hours a day, I spent the months of July and August researching materials and making reading lists from our local library. I’d outline a topic, research and learn more about each epoch in history, pencil in major events, and create a ‘Teacher’s Guide’ of the required subjects into outline form. Then I’d ‘integrate’ that information into activities and supplemental reading lists. This took a few weeks of research and plotting onto Week at a Glance “Teacher Guide” notebook for each student. ~This was BEFORE the age of online resources. I think the prep time today could be greatly reduced. There may even be software available for teacher planning!

We would cover ‘book learning’ in the morning between 9am and noon. The kids would wash up and set table for lunch and clean up after. Then they’d read historic fiction for an hour or two after lunch while I prepared hands-on activities for the afternoon, including chores. Once a week, we’d take the afternoon off to meet with other homeschoolers for outdoor games and social time. There, parents would brainstorm ideas and discuss strategies while kids would play. We kept our own schedule for field-trips to museums and cultural events that we’d attend as a family or a small group. Evenings were spent doing projects that pertained to some aspect of the overall theme or family game nights and educational movies. As the kids grew, they became more responsible for reading selection and had more time for individual study with a weekly review of their projects.

WHAT WE STUDIED: History based Social Studies

The first year of in-home learning we studied 9 week segments entitled, Egypt, Greece and Rome. We studied  the geography, climate, history, food, lifestyles and literature of each of these cultures. We studied the indigenous flora, fauna, and foods of each of these regions. We learned about and either drew, built models or presented read-aloud papers on scientific discoveries, biographies and short stories. ~ie. The kids really enjoyed cooking favorite foods of Alexander the Great, wearing togas and building catapults with a group of homeschoolers. It was great to wake up with an enthusiastic curiosity of what each day would bring!~

We studied Non-Western Civilizations for a year, although information on Russia or China was limited. We focused on the countries within Africa, India, the Middle and Far East in the same way that we did European History. We studied famous leaders and people of influence, ate more interesting foods and spent time listening to indigenous music, dress and customs, writing papers and doing creative presentations.

HOMESCHOOLING CAN BE TRAVEL

We were very lucky to be able take 3 months traveling the US in an RV while we studied US History, while my husband took a university lecture tour. That time we spent visiting State and National Parks and 32 State capitols. Speaking to locals and eating regional food, studying the State birds, trees and State historic sites topped our educational highlights. It took years to pay off that bill, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. (We didn’t take other out of state vacations during our homeschool days.) TRAVEL IS A GREAT EYE OPENER & EDUCATION!

HOMESCHOOL TIPS & SECRETS

~The secret for successful HOMESCHOOLING is to have fun with it! Ask questions and don’t be afraid to question authorities. Dig into author’s perspectives and world paradigms. Discover for yourselves what is important for your children to learn. Encourage growth and changing of interpretations as your kids mature. Require honesty and responsibility.

To avoid boredom, I presented material that was at least 2-3 grades higher level than the public school used, with moderate expectations. More often than not, my kids rose to the level of the material and went off in their own directions of SELF EDUCATING. You see, when kids figure out HOW TO LEARN, they are set up for life!

For example, in 6th grade, my son was reading Socrates, Plato and Aristotle…because he was curious about philosophy and began teaching himself Trigonometry two years later. When there are no set boundaries placed on learning, anyone can become a life-long learner and exceed expectations!

RESOURCES

Books like ‘The Well Educated Child’ give material lists to follow using ‘Great Books’ and Children’s Literature. I used some of their material and crafted it to suit my children’s learning styles. I also incorporated Catholic school curriculum as it seemed the most rigorous material, and off-set it’s doctrine based rhetoric with US History books by two other publishers. We would read these three accounts of the same material and hold discussions as to the viewpoint of the authors. The fact that “History is written by the Winners” was made obvious, and we were able to understand a more inclusive perspective of what actually may have happened. This was our version of ‘debate’ class.

Used Book Sales are great places to discover well-loved ‘hand-me-down’ texts like Saxon math, Rosetta Stone language sets, and educational games. Local homeschool groups hold one or two sales every year so these purchases are actually more like ‘rentals’ of material. This makes it affordable.

Book Fairs– I especially liked the DK trunk shows, where they sold books and family games. These were held on an irregular basis, so I would stock up on material I felt was going to be useful. Many of these books I still have and refer to on occasion.

A BASIC READING LIST FOR EDUCATORS:

‘Multiple Intelligences’ by Howard Gardner.

‘The Well-Trained Mind’ by Jessie Wise & Susan Wise Bauer (many educational books/series)

The Great Books – world class literature and curriculum

‘A Timeline of World History’ by E.L. Mellersh (Excellent resource to understand History)

Reference; Books like ‘London; A Cultural History’ by Richard Tames.

Historic Fiction; ‘Sarum’ by Edward Rutherford, a novel of London through eras.

‘From Sea To Shining Sea’ series by James Alexander Thom – US History

DK books for children – wonderfully illustrated themed books on sciences and the arts

…and SO many more! Once you get started, let your imagination run wild~

Best wishes on this new lifestyle adventure!

~K

Beth – Your Body is a Temple

Bet, or Beth, is the second letter of the Hebrew “Alpha – Bet”! Bet means home, or temple, and you may have seen the word Beth as part of a name of Jewish temples. (ie. Beth Isreal) Some times the letter includes a dot within the center of the shape. My mnemonic device is to think of it as a person within a three-walled house.

I heard early on in my Catechism class, ‘Your body is the temple of the Lord’. (1 Corinthians 6:19) Of course, then I was suspicious that this was only indoctrination for a young virgin to avoid sex outside of marriage. Later on, however, I realized that this teaching is a way to introduce the idea that SPIRITUALITY is realized in the physical world~ through our bodies.

WE ARE SPIRIT of divine energy embodied! That Holy Spirit lives in and animates our life.

When studying metaphysics, it’s important to learn how the physical world interfaces with the Spiritual before moving onto higher, more esoteric information. We have to learn how to walk before we can run. So when we begin to understand this interface, and embody that knowledge, it allows us to investigate the higher realms with more confidence.

This means that it’s important to clean up your act, and clean your temple, by eating with the intention to support the health of your body, to exercise, and to allow only positive energies into your body. Become MINDFUL to forbid energies that don’t serve your HIGHER GOOD; Listen to music that soothes your soul and allow only *positive input* into your psychic system.

If you get tense or stressed out by the outside world, learn to ground and return to a calm center using breathing exercises and by shaking off negativity, literally!

Exercise: Begin by looking around and confirming that you are in a safe space. Say aloud, “I am safe.” Then take a few deep, slow breaths and exhale thoroughly. Begin a rhythmic breathing pattern; Breathe in on a count of 4, gently stop and hold your breath for a count of 4, and then exhale to a count of 8. Repeat this until your heart rate calms. Take an internal check that your tension level has been reduced.

Then shake it off! Animals that have been stressed do this and it makes sense that we can also release tension in the same way! Shake your hands, arms and shoulders at your sides, then bend your knees and shake your hips and legs too. Do this while visualizing negativity falling off your body. You can even ‘wipe’ it off of yourself and shake your hands of negativity.

When you feel you’re finished, take an internal check-in with your body and LISTEN to what it ‘tells’ you. It will probably be something like, ‘ahh that’s better’ and ‘Thank you!’. It’s important to listen to your BODY so you can catch illness before it sets in. Pre-emptive action, like hydrating, eating or resting are important in keeping your Temple running smoothly!

[Never be too Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. HALT and take self-care actions.]

Didja know that your body is surrounded by a protective alert system called the ‘AURA’?? The aura is an energy field that surrounds the outside of your physical body and has been shown through Kirlian photography. This ‘electrical coronal discharge’ energy has been recognized by mystics for a millennia or longer. Most people today have heard of this energy. You can learn to ‘see’ it, too. Here is an exercise to help you learn to see this energy.

Exercise: If you’ve ever seen the effect of looking down a long country road at midday in the summer heat, you’ll know that there’s a visual effect of rising waves of heat that rises above the road. The energy that surrounds all living things is similar to this heat pattern. So think of the heat that rises off a hot road in the summer.

Now, hold your hands out in front of you, relax your eyes and soften your gaze. Look gently around your hands, focusing on your fingertips and between your fingers. Slowly move your fingers and watch for the clear energy that trails behind the movement of your fingers. That clear space that is a quarter to half-inch width that surrounds your hands is part of your aura.

Try it with a friend. Have a friend stand in front of a white or light solid-colored wall. Ask them to think of something that makes them happy. Relax your eyes and soften your gaze as you look just above their head and shoulders. You may see a clear ‘halo’ that seems to encase their body. As their emotions grow happier, the width of this aura may also fluctuate. It may be tinged with colors that softly swirl within it.

Practice this ‘looking’ exercise on anything that’s alive, including your pets and plants. Everything ALIVE has an aura! You can BET on it!~

YHVH or God’s “Pinball Wizard”

The holy Tetragrammaton consists of the letters YHVH, and means ‘Jehovah’ or the unpronounceable name of God.

The letters themselves have several meanings with subtle differentiations; for example, the letter Y is pronounced Yud or Yod, as there are no specific vowels in Hebrew.

YUD is a spark, a spiritual flame, the indwelling Spirit, the Holy Spirit and YOD, means the finger of God (as an astrological configuration), which also means a direction, your purpose, and your path. (Picture Pentecostal flames of Spirit on the heads of disciples speaking in tongues.)

The letter H, pronounced Heh, in noun form, means ‘window’ and in esoterically, word, thought, and idea. When you put these two meanings together you may grasp the meaning of ‘an idea working like a window of the mind’.

The letter V, pronounced Vav, as a noun, means ‘nail’ and metaphorically means the ‘joiner,’ which functions like the word ‘and,’ that esoterically means ‘that which gives meaning’ so that Understanding can occur.

Taking these three letters’ meanings together, we see that YHVH can mean ‘Inspired Ideas And Inspired Words’. This, in short, is the definition of ‘divine’ and ‘holy’.

An interesting insight of the 9 Keys Tarot is that the #1 card is the Magi, short for Magician. This is an Initiate of hidden knowledge, who creates magic in the world. He takes inspired ideas and transforms them into physical manifestations by way of spoken word and action. Just as we all get ideas and pursue them until our goals are reached.

The suffix of the word Heh, however is feminine, so the word Heh could take on an added meaning of ‘the male female’ idea.

The #2 card is the Muse, who takes initial input she receives from the Magi and translates it for their mutual Understanding. She is the Subconscious, to his Conscious mind. Once this mutual agreement has been reached, they both work with the Source of inspiration to begin to manifest on this Earth plane.

The word ‘Vav’, as a suffix, is male and gives the meaning to the ‘male female’ Understanding. When combined in the supernal, or highest, triangle of the Tree of Life glyph, aka the Godhead, we see that the Yud – insight, combines with the male female idea, and the male female understanding to become a closed circuit of energy that forms a triune Mind of Wisdom and Understanding.

It is by each of us discovering the anima to our animus, and our animus to our anima, that we become whole beings. Only after this merging happens can we heal the split within, allowing us to rise to higher frequencies of our Higher Self, which is egoless, observing and wise. In this state, the Divine within us becomes activated and we become co-creators with God. ~Namaste.

One day I’ll have a POWER POINT to present this cool idea, until then…

*Picture a pin-ball machine where the ball falls from the highest sphere, dropping down to the right. The flipper is activated and the ball is shot over to the left side, at which time the flipper returns the ball to the right where it is projected back to the outlet it came from, but this time there is a barrier that pushes the ball back to the lower left, where it is pushed downward to the center after the supernal triangle is activated – and lights up! Wheee~

10 of Water – PISCES Decaniii – Happiness

10 of Water – Pisces Decan iii – March 9 – 19 – 9 KEYS TAROT

“Man’s search for Happiness can create a false sense of urgency, whereas the presence of mind can create an oasis in the desert of the soul.” -me

When we are free to express ourselves and our quest for individuation is complete, what kinds of emotions will we see manifesting in our lives?

These are the questions that the third Decan of Pisces brings.  Typically, this card exemplifies the attainment of Emotion, which I interpret as ‘Happiness’. What emotion is on your mind right now? How do you see yourself going about attaining it?

Astrologically, we are in a rather confused state of energies as Mercury is retrograde until the end of the month, Mar 28. Uranus has just ingressed into Aries for the next 8 years, bringing chaos and sudden changes to the forefront of our frontal lobes. “Be prepared to be startled, yet learn to regroup after emotional shocks”, is the lesson ahead.

Neptune’s influence will create even more confusion about truth and lies, so remember to check your media sources carefully before jumping to conclusions. Learning to return to our core self, is a secret to remaining calm in the midst of chaos.

Learning self-soothing techniques, such as EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique or ‘tapping’ exercises may help you to confront overwhelming emotions and recenter yourself.

Try this link on YouTube; Nick Ortner has good video demonstrations of EFT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRfLTQjJhp0

The intelligence of this Decan is to learn to appreciate what good is present in the current moment. ‘Presence of mind can create an oasis in the desert of the soul.’ Namaste’ ~K

Mind is the Builder

“The Spirit is Life. The Mind is the Builder. The physical is the result.”  -Edgar Cayce, The Sleeping Prophet 1877-1945, edgarcayce.org

Minds is the Creative power that links us to the Great Creator, the Creative Cosmic Mind. Mankind was created above the animals but just below angels by our gift of thought. It is through our power of thought that we are creators of our realities. This is something that instinctive animals do not have; the power of reason, logic, the ability to pause and choose our reactions, the power of memory that serves to inform our consciousness and conscience. The power of Intellectual Thought comes through the evolutionary development of our brain size and capacity.
A drawback to thought is that thought depends on our perspective. Our perspective is shaped by our interpretation of past events and our programs. We are programmed to view the world in a specific way, based on our parents’ beliefs, our culture and accepted norms. Without questioning this initial programming, we are like robots operating on presets. It is our adult responsibility to check on the motivations and reasons that we were programmed in the first place and re-set our basic values, morality, and perspective to those universal virtues that provide equality, fairness and serve all of humanity.
Perspective forms and flavors Beliefs.
Beliefs lead to clear Understanding.
Understanding leads to right actions.
Right action is the way to a good life via good karma.
Karma works to attract to us that vibration with which we resonate.
Knowing yourself is the first step toward understanding everything~
We must encourage each other to be empowered to take responsibility for our own lives. Seek and you will discover. In discovering, you will be confused. By sorting out that confusion you will be amazed. And in that amazement, you will see the truth of things and you will know the truth of your Self;
You are a Divine Being having a Human Experience!

Metaphysical Me

About Metaphysical Me…

One of my most impactful experiences with spirituality/religion was being ‘failed’ from the second year of my three year Lutheran Catechism class. I told my minister and vicar that ‘God doesn’t fail people from church!’. They agreed with me and after a year’s sabbatical and the subsequent firing of this teacher who failed kids in church, I asked many pointed questions, finished my lessons, got confirmed and left.

In college, my most influential classes were the three-term Shakespeare series, learning how to SEE and draw from an artists viewpoint (that was quite esoteric) and an Introduction to Comparative Religions. Then I took a term off and studied with Mormon missionaries, read the Bhagavad-Gita, Tibetian and Egyptian Books of the Dead, the Tao te Ching, and many other metaphysical books. This lit my Spiritual Fire and I’ve been devouring these books ever since!

(See recommended book list) —> Archives

Later, upon becoming a Unitarian Universalist, I had the opportunity to learn more about many religions and experience them firsthand in “Neighboring Faiths” Sunday school classes. After teaching students for 8 weeks, I accompanied groups of children to Buddhist center feasts, Catholic mass, a Jewish temple, and Pagan ceremonies. Over the years my family has participated in Kwaanza, Hindu Festival of Lights, and Hanukkah festivities.

I homeschooled my kids for 8 years founded on a History-based Wholistic education, of which I wrote my own curriculum. I based my lessons and exams on textbooks from various points of view and encouraged open-minded discussions about the reasons for the author’s points of view and their veracity. We first studied World Geography & World Religions as a comprehensive introduction to becoming ‘Citizens of the World’.

As homeschoolers, we practiced exercises by Rudolf Steiner and read Classic English literature, Great Books, Historic Fiction and books of Cultural Literacy from all continents. We read ancient philosophers and discussed their subsequent roles in modern society.

I was engaged with esoteric studies for many years before co-leading a Women’s spirituality group. We incorporated many facets from various spiritual traditions, and each woman encouraged to bring her gifts and experiences to share with the group.

After leaving that position, my 10-year interest in the Kabbalah, led me to study more intently and take a year-long webinar class with two Rabbis. I learned much about the Hebrew Mystical traditions from a Jewish Reform perspective. I found the Kabbalah to be THE foundation for the many esoteric paths I had studied since my 20’s.

Today I practice Tai chi, Chi Gong, Kundalini Yoga and write ‘Morning Pages’ as is recommended by Julia Cameron in her transformational book, “The Artist’s Way”. I participated and led classes in “The Artist’s Way” and discovered that it was a book written (by and) for the Enneagram Type #4 personality, the ‘Artist’. That’s when I decided to create workbooks for the other 8 Enneagram personality types that I call, “Integrated Spiritual Practices”. TBA

I’ve studied and used the Tarot as well for many years. I started noticing the esoteric ‘threads of Truth’ that run throughout all the systems and traditions that I’ve engaged with and noticed their Archetypes can be found in pictoral symbolism on the Tarot.

I’ve created a unified system that is based on a lesser-used form of the Tree of Life Glyph. I see it as the original glyph of Kabbalah before the ‘fall’ of man. I have placed my own version, the “9 Keys Tarot” cards onto this Tree in a unique way as a blueprint to help people ascend to their Higher Self – closer to a state of Spiritual perfection. This corresponds to 9 Esoteric systems, which is no small feat!

Metaphysics describes both the ‘Art of Living’ & the ‘Science of Life.’      I hope that my writing will encourage you to look within yourself and begin what Plato called, “The Great Work” of personal understanding and wisdom. After all, it’s our once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn, grow and evolve our Souls while we are incarnate beings. Look within!

Namaste’ ~K

Healers Overcoming Rejection

“When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything.” –Andrew Boyd

When you see the pain in the world you may want to ease it. It may grieve you terribly to see it- and you may even feel it within your Body and Soul. You may feel it is your responsibility to erase it or ease it. We must do what we can, but we must also be ready to acknowledge what is ours and what is not ours. There are boundaries to our energy and unfortunately, who we can help. Some people choose not to heal.

You may find it hard to turn away because you know your destiny is bound with the destiny of others. You have crossed paths for a reason. We are here to teach each other life lessons. And when we reach out to others and they refuse to take our hand, it’s confusing and hurtful.

Don’t take their rejection personally. You are only responsible for your Self. You must allow others to take responsibility for themselves. It empowers them to do so and to claim it as their own.

You must grow strong enough to realize that everyone walks their path at their own pace. Although you’d like to reach out and hold their hand and walk with you, where you are~ Not everyone is ready for that.

If you look ahead and see others ahead of you on the path you may want to be with them. That also hurts. You must hold compassion for yourself and honor your march as your own. Believe in your journey and keep moving to your own music.

Keep shining brightly. Be the light in the darkness, so that others who catch a glimpse of your love and light have a direction to follow.

We are ALL headed to the same light.

We will ALL get there, eventually.

We learn as much as our souls can handle in this life. At our own pace and timing.

It may take a few more lives to master.

But know this….. You are loved…… You are part of God.

Grounding & Centering for Stress Reduction

Grounding & Centering techniques and tips:

~So, a friend of mine wanted to know how to get herself ‘grounded and centered’ after a hard weekend event that she was involved in. If you are an event planner, promoter or producer, you know how whacked out you can get emotionally and physically after a HUGE event! So here are some tips for getting your MoJo back after you’ve been physically and psychically drained. ~These are also some good practices for regular Spiritual hygiene:

*GROUNDING is reconnecting your body’s electromagnetic field, or aura, to the Earth’s. It is done by Visualizing your energy flowing from your crown down to the soles of your feet into the Earth and then flowing back in. It is best done on the Earth in bare feet, but you can do this on the floor as well. As you inhale, envision your crown chakra at the top of your head, slowly opening with each breath and allowing you to gather up all the energy that lies in the bubble that surrounds you, called your aura. Gather up this energy and send it down through your body, out through your feet and into the Earth with an exhale. As you inhale, breathe in positive Earth energy to fill up your body into every cell and filling your aura.#

*CENTERING is another Visualizing and Energetic movement exercise where you gather all of your scattered energies and gently compress them back into the center of your Soul at your Solar Plexus Chakra. It is important to learn to hold your mindful presence in this mental and physical state, so that you can stay in a calm center even as chaos rolls about outside of you. Think of yourself as the eye of the storm as you move calmly and decisively through your day.# So here’s how to do it:

A. CLEANSING; Have a hot Epsom Salt bath. This helps to ease weary muscles and is a great way to get vital nutrient magnesium back into your body. The salts will pull toxins out of your body so shower off with cooler water and have a tall drink of water and a good long rest. Anytime you’ve had a hard day or taken an emotional hit, take a shower and visualize the negativity draining away as you shower it off. If you need to, have a good cry and release that stress right down the drain too!

B. GROUNDING; To get out of your headspace and back into your body, do a little barefoot movement to connect the soles of your feet to the Earth energy. You can stretch, roll around on a mat, do yoga and/or walk barefoot on the soil or sand. This is a great way to wake up your body again after that long nap. Start working the joints of your feet, roll your ankles, stretch up onto the balls of your feet and down on a step, while balancing by holding onto a chair. Then stretch your calves, knees, hips and thighs by doing some lunges. You know, pretend you are sword fighting and step out and bend your knees gently as you say “En guarde!” Do this on both legs gently to warm up.

Then walk briskly while swinging your arms (or even march) to get some air flowing in and around your body. The aerobic inflow of oxygen will help wake up your brain and revitalize all of your cells. At this point, sing a song or chant or shout. It releases tension held in your body.

Then try a Yoga “Tree pose” by standing with both feet squarely and comfortably below your shoulders with your hands at your sides. Raise your arms as you inhale and slowly drop them with each inhalation. With each deep and slow inhalation imagine your breath coming from within the Earth, up your legs and into your body. With each exhalation allow your nervous energy to flow back into the Earth. Try breathing IN, to the count of 4 and OUT, to the count of 8. This allows you to relax. Be aware of how your body feels. Be aware of how YOU in your body feel! Hopefully, your body is more solid and strong feeling.

C. CENTERING; Close your eyes, and feel your SELF within your body. Extend your energy outward horizontally as far as you can picture, visualizing the natural elements of the Earth. FOCUS on a theme or KEYWORD. As you bring your awareness back into yourself, gather all the positive energy you need from the trees, rocks, streams, sunshine, and Earth. State your Intention; “I need to remember who I am.” or  “I intend to reclaim my natural state of grace and calm that refreshes me.”

At this point, I gather my art supplies, mandalas, incense and candle to prepare for a “busy but relaxed” mental state of meditation. As I light my tealight candle, I state my intention and say a prayer of gratitude for being able to take time to heal myself through mindfulness. Then I relax as I color the mandala. All the while I think of myself as the shape of the mandala and infill those parts of my body with colors that seem appropriate for the energies I want to embody from the center, outward.

D. EMBODY this energy; When I’m finished coloring I like to vocalize something about it aloud. This will remind me to EMBODY my intended energy! I will strive to feel this same way whenever I look at this mantra. A simple song I like to use is this; “As I breathe in, I breathe in Peace. As I breathe out, I breathe out Love.”~ You can chant while you finish up the last bits of coloring to embed your emotion into the art that reminds you of your Authentic Self that lives in your Center.

E. RECHARGE; Did you know that our bodies are electromagnetic batteries!? In order to recharge your body use this Chi-gong inspired method; Place one hand over your dominate fist and place it on your stomach, just below the center of your ribcage. It fits there nicely. In a sitting position, bend forward and exhale to the count of 4. As you sit back up, inhale to the count of 8. Do this as it feels comfortable to you. Repeat until you feel your energy flowing into all of your cells. That could be about 10 times.

F. MOVE IT; Try the Tai chi “Moving Ocean Waves” exercise to get your chi moving. I found this youtube of Jake Mace doing some great movements that beginners can do: Be comfortable. Move at your own pace gently so nothing hurts. The third movement, Ocean Waves is my favorite for getting your center energy moving!
