Runes are the 24 letters used by the early priestly class of Germanic Celts. They hold multiple mystic meanings in each rune, family of runes and combination of runes.

Carved into clay or chiseled out of wood and stone using short marks, most runes shapes consist of geometric shapes. Some of the runes are the mirror images of Phoenician and Greek alphabets.

My theory is that traders along the Kievian plains of Russia came into contact with Middle Eastern traders and scribes around the Black Sea. Northern people transported these writing systems to their priests, who then used them as visual aids in their oral storytelling tradition. See ‘The Story of Writing’ by Andrew Robinson.
